History of Cardiff

Although this beach community is Encinitas is small, it does have a very interesting history. All the way back to the 1700's is where the development of this community began, by Spanish colonizers who came to construct missionaries. Fast forward almost 200 years and the Boston Developer J. Frank Cullen, fell in love with the picturesque farming community and decided to purchase land. At the time he was selling plots of land for a whopping $30 (a number you could cry over now) where residents could buy land and build a home. The name Cardiff comes from Cullen's wife, Esther, who was a native of Cardiff, Wales in Brittain. She asked him to name the small community after her hometown and call it Cardiff-by-the-sea. Today many streets are still named after English towns like "Birmingham", "Oxford", and "Manchester". The development of this small community started as a place for families to enjoy the ocean, start a business, and raise their families, and it has maintained this lifestyle ever since.
